How to choose a pickleball paddle

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing racket sports in South Africa, and picking your first paddle does not need to be complicated. Three choices shape how a paddle plays: core thickness, paddle shape, and weight.

The short version. A thicker 16mm core gives you control and touch. A thinner 14mm core gives you power and pop. A standard shape is more forgiving, an elongated shape reaches further and hits harder. And weight sets how the paddle feels, from quick and light to heavy and driven.

Core thickness, the biggest decision

A thicker 16mm core plays softer, with a larger sweet spot and more control, which is why touch players and newer players tend to prefer it. A thinner 14mm core plays firmer, with more pop and power, but it is less forgiving on off-centre hits. Starting out? Lean toward 16mm. Already playing and want to hit through the ball? Look at 14mm.

Paddle shape, reach against forgiveness

Most paddles are either standard or elongated. Standard paddles have a wider face and a bigger sweet spot, so they are more forgiving. Elongated paddles trade some sweet spot for extra reach and power. New players are usually better served by a standard shape.

Weight, feel in the hand

Lighter paddles move faster at the net and are easier on the arm. Heavier paddles carry more drive but ask more of your hands. A midweight paddle sits in the middle and is the safe first choice. Every product page lists the weight.

Face material and certification

The face affects feel and spin. Carbon faces are known for control, spin and durability, while fibreglass adds pop. If you plan to play sanctioned tournaments, check that a paddle is approved for competition before you buy, and we are happy to confirm that per model.
